“When you pray to God in psalms and hymns, entertain your heart with what your lips are reciting.”
St. John the evangelist
St. John the Evangelist is a friendly, family-oriented and welcoming Roman Catholic community, worshipping in one of Calgary’s oldest churches. Located in the historic Inglewood neighbourhood, St. John’s is now home to our modest Gilbertine restoration.
The former Anglican parish was founded in 1905 (as part of the Church of England in Canada), and the present church dates from 1911, a living tribute to the work and ministry of the parish’s second Rector, The Reverend Canon Gervase Edward Gale. It was a founding parish of the Personal Ordinariate of the Chair of St. Peter.
Rooted in orthodox Catholic teaching and practice, worship at the Church is infused with a noble Anglican liturgical, musical and spiritual patrimony. St. John’s is a young and growing parish community — now five years old — celebrating the joy of what it is to live the Catholic Faith in its fulness.
The community rejoices in the historic gesture of Pope Benedict XVI in giving them the opportunity to enter the fullness of Catholic life in communion with the Apostolic See whilst retaining elements of the patrimony of our Anglican tradition as a precious gift “nourishing the faith of the members of the Ordinariate and as a treasure to be shared.”
